FHIR explained for CIOs: what you need to know before issuing an RFP

FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is a standard for exchanging clinical data using the same technologies as the modern web.
Five questions for a vendor
- Which FHIR version do you support, and which national profiles do you validate against?
- Do you expose a real FHIR API, or do you only export files?
- Where is the queried data stored?
- How is each access audited?
- What happens to my data if I end the contract?
Warning signs
“FHIR-compatible” is not the same as “speaks FHIR.” Always ask for a demo against a test server.
